Dear Daddy

Today my dad would have been 81! He died about 4 years ago 16 days before his 77th birthday. If anyone watched the Pixar movie UP, he looked just like Mr. Fredrickson complete with white hair, frown, glasses and cane with the four encased tennis balls, except he wore a polo shirt instead of the sportcoat and bowtie.

I think he was poking at me today. While in badminton, I seriously twisted my knee (I've never done that) and now I'm using one of his cane and reliving all our physical therapy tips and tricks. And yes, injuring me so that I would remember him today is EXACTLY what he would do.

Anyway, Happy B-day, AFC!

Hi y'all! miss me?? Well, I MISSED you!

Mea Culpa etc. about not participating these past months. I was truly incommunicado: first on trips (to Australia and San Diego), then an injuried right hand (too tedious to explain), and some anti-social laziness lately. So I have been lightly lurking the past few weeks. I'm trying to catch up on ficcs and entries I've missed BUT ... its just too much!!! Ergo, I'm granting myself an amnesty for reading and responding (or not reading and responding?), okay folks?

Hello F-List!

First, apologies for not being around. I’m not lurking – I really haven’t been around LJ. I’ve been genuiniely busy with RL (planning for two trips this summer) but when I have time to think about BSG – well, I’m not emotionally ready to mourn with everyone out there just yet. So pardon my distance for just a bit longer.

Overall, I was content with the ending. Now, while there were some disappointing parts in the Finale, I find it distasteful to talk meanly of the dead. Eh, I loved this show and the fandom too much that I really do want to stay away from negativity… cause I guess I’ll feed from it.

Tonight though I really miss the anticipation for a new episode of BSG. *Sighs* I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I may miss BSG-hiatus-hell. I probably will re-start reading LJ and y’all's thoughts. Be assured I will participate (and not just lurk) – just pardon me if I seem a little bit too late to the conversation yet again!

On second note, I will be on a family vacation from this coming Monday for about 2 weeks. I’m not sure what the internet situation will like be like so I might even be AWOL yet again.

I really DO want to stay connected to the fandom (LUV U ALL!!!!!), but I just needed this mini-break. I plan to start looking at my F-list starting March 21! Yikes that’s many many pages, so if any of you have a particular post you think I should read RFN, please do mention it! I might even clean up my reaction draft and post it if I get some time (or decide to procrastinate from packing).

So while I'll give the thumbs up for the episode as a whole, I am really really unhappy with the state of Kara-ships.

Galactica being scuttled. But while I 'm annoyed at that, I'm uneasy with the state of Kara.

Without having seen anyone else's reaction, I can't make up my mind whether that was the death or the cementing of either of Kara's ships. I cheered when LEE STEPS UP and searches for Kara after Baltar outs her. But for all that affirmation (and man, he made her smile that brilliant SMILE), where was the embrace (kiss or hug)? I screamed at Lee to go back! Then her words to Sam: I wished for you to be Sam. Just My Sam; BUT then that squee was also ruined with "I've come to accept you're no longer Sammy." My heart broke to pieces. Is she mourning? Its good/bad/confused to be multi-shipper!

So Galactica's to be abandoned. Unless Anders becomes Galactica's Hybrid. And while I prefer that to him being dead, I can't say I approve with this twist. At least not yet. I dunno; maybe I'll feel different tomorrow. I sure hope y'all will have positive spins on this cause I'm feeling mighty unsure right now. I'll need to watch it again (after I sleep).

Other unhappy developments: The Council of Captains <<< so much worse Quorum. Lee was supposed to take the shirt off, not put the jacket back on. Why did Dee ruin a perfect K/L moment by being there? (Also, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have wanted to go up where Kara was or even next to Kat). Dr. Scientist ruins his brief appearance by backstabbing my girl. Laura's out for the count. Why was there no Reckoning for Tyrol (and for that matter Tory up to now)? And that new wall!paint scene --- not as sexy as Kara's :(

But I did like the episode. I can see a resolution of sorts in sight (with probable SPACE PORN). The Opera House approaches! The Colony (ant farm more like) revealed! And Kara is closer to the 'truth' than ever? Even the two crews are learning to live with each other, esp since the Cylons seem to have given up the idea of running away. I'm starting to hope (JUST SPEC) despite all the pits, the human race's gonna survive.

On the bright side, Boomer found a new shiny! Let's hope Hera's successful in unleashing her massive powers of perfect curls on Valerii - cause I have a feeling Cavil's immune. And wait, Cylons have chocolate! What better incentive for the Fleet to go find Hera? This somehow makes more sense to me than The Fleet not having toothpaste. And Laura did have a secret stash - which she shared! And LOVED (then hated) the Memorial Hall scene (but only before Lee left her). And also the "just my sam" (but before she plugs him back). I even loved that Bill just waved the whole DESTINY thang yet again. And that ONLY Laura and Kara respectively can change the agnostic Bill's and Lee's minds about this.

Of course, the questions remains: What is Kara Thrace? Is Daniel=Dreilide? Where does Caprica and Ellen bunk? Why are Leobens not integrating? Hasn't Ishay been outed as ruining Sam's operation and Caprica's fetus (I'm obsessed with this improbable tangent). Who is the true dying leader? Can Hybrids have sex? Will we see Gods/God? Where's the tabloid press when you need them???

First thoughts re: Brain Hemorrhage

I might have more to say when I think about it some more.

However some brief thoughts:

Was it me, or did the episode seem short? I mean we got a lot of information and not a lot of action nor of RECKONING. About 400 + 40* people died during the mutiny. I'd like to see Diana and Mags and Gage suffer. PLEASE.

I did squee squee squee at all the Kara-Sam!! I jumped when Cottle called the WIFE to have the final say. All those bedside vigils - gah!!!!!!!!!! And then after surgery Kara's all TENDER but then Sam DOESN'T WAKE UP. bwah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the episode and now I hate it. He better wake up. And not just because there's information to be had, but for KARA!

How cool were Michael Trucco (even bald) and Kate Vernon and (even Dean Stockwell) giving our main characters a break in order to come up with an unified explanation of everything for all us?

After the coolest Pre-cap, we (FINALLY) get exposition of why the Earth Cylons travelled to the Colonies. But how did they know where the Colonies were, since presumably Earth had no contact with them since they left Kobol in the other direction) Alas they get there too late for the first Cylon War, but they build eight (EIGHT) model skinjobs as a tradeoff for peace with the humans. We also get why the Cylons returned- Cavil/John was running the show after committing fratricide and then patricide.

In disco-hell, John Cavil torments a trapped Ellen by pushing his sins and mommy issues to his creator. If Hell is other skinjobs, then really why are they looking for resurrection? Boomer did escape from the HUB. But flips yet again and helps Ellen run presumably to the RTF where Tyrol, childless widower, and Saul, widower with pregnant Caprica, are.

I wanted backstory and explanation. I got backstory and explanation. But I just hate hate that Sam's left in a coma? (I smell a rat *coughs*ISHAY). Sammy!!!!! *wibbles*

Meanwhile the damage to Galactica is sooo bad that they can't jump at all and Adama gives in to give Galactica a metal transfusion of sorts. Zarek finally got his CHANGE, so Laura sends Lee to form a new type of government with a warning to be smarter and to be wrong. Oh, and the cancer seems to be staying.

But the bad news is, there is a COLONY out there hidden by Ellen, presumably habitable with the nice allied Cylons. Also, Cavil's out to recapture Ellen and the other four. And the ship is breaking apart. And the Admiral still is drinking. But the absolutely WORST NEWS is that SAM IN A COMA.

So any speculation who Daniel might be: Daniel Greystone? Daniel Maddog Novacek? A Daniel Thrace? Daniel, the PC guy? (better not be). How many mutineers are in the brig? Will Ellen build a resurrection ship? Did Boomer escape with Ellen or did 'plant' to track the Four? Does finding out that Tory and Tyrol were an item make more or even less sense for Tory offing Cally? What's the odds for a catfight? Ellen vs. Caprica? Tory vs. Boomer? Kara v the nurse who probably messed up Sam's brain? Yeah, I'm there.

I'll try to say something more meaningful next post, but after I've read y'all's reactions.

*(I've done the math, its actually 40 and 44 people dead in the last two episodes).

Reaction to Blood On The Scales

No live blog for BotS. Just some random thoughts:

I’m glad that the Mutiny was resolved without a Cavil invasion deux ex machina ‘forcing’ the opposing sides to re-unite.

Keeping count of the traitors: OY! Racetrack and Seelix became Zarek-floozies almost immediately. TSK! Why Maggie why??? Thankfully, Hotdog wasn’t part of the mutiny. Also, I cheered for the reform of Capt. Kelly (I guess he was in the brig the entire time! BTW, was Hardian there too?). But Narcho et al will be a continuing problem for the XO. But, where were Conner and Venner, and how did Figurski and Cottle side? Galactica is under Adama’s command again, but how’s he gonna determine the line in the sand?

The Quorum of Long Knives. Ugh, that was really ugly. There was no idealism there, just a murderous power grab. At least Zarek stayed true to the traditional definition of ‘revolution’: permanent change ONLY through bloodshed.

I’ve always complained that the Quorum was an antiquated form of representation, and I thought the Fleet ought to be represented by Governors (ie, the ship captains). So I guess Zarek did get what he wanted: finally change the system. But now what? Galactica can’t shoot all the mutineers. The white board won’t allow it. Also, 25 of 35 ships couldn’t commit behind Adama. How will they get the Fleet to unite?

Even before Tyrol saw the damage, I had had a very bad feeling when Kelly said, “This was helluva ship once”. Oh FRAK the foreshadowing. Galactica can’t die? What will we call the show? (Oh right, it is the last season… ) L

I’ll skip the Gaeta-hate this time; I’m sure the discussion will be lively elsewhere. I loved AJ’s performance and loved to hiss Gaeta. I adored the Gaius/Felix relationship in the end. Baltar is atoning. I believe Baltar was at the execution at Gaeta’s request. Will he write Gaeta’s story?

The Apollo/Starbuck GunTeam was awesome. I enjoyed Lee being all Starbuck-y with the grenade. And Kara being pissy that she hadn’t done it. More please.

Oh, but my eye-candy, SAMUEL T! All that blood!! I FEAR! I DREAD! I mean, Kara stayed with him, over BILL Adama! So now what does that mean? Are the writers setting up his death??? NO!!!! Who else will be left to hug my badass girl? I had wanted a scene with them, but not this. L L

I suspect there was a lot of missing sequences cut: Meeting up with Kelley; Laura’s arc on the baseship; Leoben’s electonics. Romo with the Anders; Comeuppance for Racetrack. Lots of staccato pacing in this episode. I hope we get extended version pdq.

Overall, I loved it. The episode definitely was not as a tense as The Oath, but even more engaging. I can’t wait to see how what the fallout will be, can Galactica be repaired, and if we'll return to engimas of Revelations and SAGN?

THOUGHTS:

I can’t believe it but I’m even more depressed than I was last episode. Yes, I know the show’s dark… but man, a tiny break would be good? For example, a hug for Kara? I know I’d feel giddy if Tory got whacked by the Chief! Even a sunny flashback would be cheery. It is truly depressing when the comic relief is a sad drunk. (BTW, since the Lecherous Preacher’s not quite back, so I will deem Clean* Apathetic Nihilist to be ‘still hot’ for yet another episode.)

The leadership vacuum is really acute. Everyone’s unhinged. Discipline is non-existent. Normally I’d be behind Zarek’s speech on tyranny at the top, but really I can’t side with that opportunist. The difference IS patriotism – love of your nation more than your own ambitions. I want to celebrate representative democracy, but guess in this universe I’m just a right-wing fascist.

During Adama’s interrogation, all I kept thinking was that old Roslin would have Zarek begging to lick her glasses clean within seconds. But if the Prez is AWOL much longer, I will blame her for the frak-up to come.

As to that frak-up to come, I think I called it: civil war within the RTF! But the twist- I did not expect mutiny on Galactica. Oh Felix you un-felicitous gimp - haven’t you learned you always FAIL miserably when you go against Adama: Remember President Baltar? The Demitrius? Remember NC? Judicious you are not, especially on morpha.

But I was really depressed about Cally’s secret. (I was hoping for the reveal about Tory’s secret.) I can get that TPTB want to focus on Hera, but what a way to spit on a dead woman. So will this last bit jar Tyrol’s loyalties, esp now that Tyrol’s taking D’anna spokesperson role (I guess she really did stay on the planet). Do the Cylons really believe in citizenship? Hah, dream on, no way would that win a referendum. Where are Sam and Tory? In the baseship or in the Fleet?

Overall, a meh episode for me. Intellectually, I know that this is a set up episode and I am excited to see where will lead. BUT I really need some backstory regarding Ellen, Earth, and Kara:

An explanation on how those Five got to the Colonies.
A Kara-Sam scene. Dude, they really need to talk. Boo!
I need to see Roslin getting it together. But I guess some nookie counts as “getting it together.”

Let’s see if I can get my head back together by next episode.

OY! My brain may be a little broke. I’m trying to not to read anyone else reactions before I post mine own, because if I read others’ perspectives I might censor myself. But this season is my last chance to post MY reactions, so here goes:

ELLEN? SHE was never on my dradis. NEVER. I really wanted it to be Adama or Zak. But what really really surprised me was that she was revealed this early... unless Ellen is a fake out? Will Tigh tell the others? And if Ellen is the last Cylon, then what the frak is Starbuck?

My poor darling Kara is all alone again! She needs a hug! But Lee’s all emo over Dee. Adama’s lamenting over everyone else but Kara. Sam’s hung up on a song he sang for a some ~~skank~~girl he loved. Even Leoben is running out on her! By the way, Leoben freaking out: The best facial expression evah! If Leoben’s upset, then it must be really really really bad. So what is Kara? I checked with “He That Believeth In Me” and Kara’s wearing tags but I can't see a ring. If anyone sees the ring anywhere else in 4.0, please tell me.

The flashbacks and the forensics were intriguing. (On a side note, it was great to see Gaius, the Brilliant Scientist, actually sane. No head!angels, no nymph squad, no evasion. A little bland, but all of a sudden, hot. But if Twitchy Weasel or Lecherous Preacher comes back, I sooooo take that back.) So the final five died two thousand years ago and X-light years away. How did they get reborn on the Colonies? How did they meet then part from the Seven? How do the Seven know of them, when the Five do not know what they are? Why were only five out of all those people resurrected? What happened to the other people on ‘earth’?

‘Earth’ is still in quotations for me. We earthlings have been here for more than 1600 years. (Both the colonists and the 13th tribe left Kobol 4000 years ago (or 3600) ago. They landed in their respective systems and built civilizations. 2000 years ago this planet had humanoid cylons, mechanical-cylons-but-not-colonial, and a nuclear fallout.) Also those skyscraper ruins looked wrong.

Both Humans and Cylons have now lost their faith: Leoben admitted he’s wrong and Laura’s burned Pythia. But because of that or because of the alliance, maybe they both have broken the merry-go-round repetitive cycle. And free from prophecy, as Lee pointed out, they can create a new history. Adama, after a heart-to-heart from Tigh, is gonna latch on to this. But will the Fleet?

I loved the overall theme of dashed hopes and the oppressive guilt by the leaders to gambled their existence based on a mistaken assumption. ~~Do you think Bush even feels a fraction of Laura’s guilt?~~ I hope she gets it together soon cause I love pragmatic Roslin; But if not, she should resign, leaving her free to marry Bill.

But talk about dashed hopes! Little Ana bought it. Hee! (I know, I’m mean.) I admit I was hissing every time she was on screen and was extremely suspicious she’d end up the Fifth. I think RDM wanted to silence all the Dee-bashers by guilt-tripping us with this scene. But sorry, I’m devilishly untroubled! Except for fact that the little martyr-face now has a death-hold on Lee: She’s preventing Kara from sharing her burdens with Lee; and Lee, after being told that he has to be the one to give hope to the Fleet, will feel now guilty for not ‘saving’ her. Well at least, RDM finally gave the actress some decent material and believable motivation before offing her.

BEST PARTS:
• Leoben is afraid. Very afraid. (CKR FTW)
• Tigh’s flashback IN THE WATER. (I love water shots that’s so obviously not filmed in a water tank.)
• Sam + guitar.
• From book-thumping to book-burning. Awwww, poor Laura.
• Kara's burning ?herself?. Twisted!
• Tigh stays stone sober, but only to let BFF Bill lose it.
• Kara wanting to confide with Lee, but being sensitive (finally?) to Lee.
• FRAK EARTH Graffiti.

MEH THINGS:
• The heavy-handedness of the swimming foxes analogy, although it does give Tigh an excuse to swim.
• Lee’s invitation felt contrived just so TPTB would have Lee grieving by Act 4 like a widower rather than an ex. (I mean I thought he grew out of his need for affirmation.)
• The Kara double (just guessing) building the bonfire… nope, it looked liked a guy with a wig.
• No Sam and Kara heart-to-heart. (They better have one soon.)
• D’anna’s staying. And Cavil’s still out there.

Still, all this didn’t detract from a great angsty beginning. I can’t possibly guess what’s next and that’s brilliant! The only thing I fear is that the series finale will be just as depressing. I'm not sure what I'd feel about that.

OTHER RANDOM THINGS:
• What's that plant? Hmmm, Laura seems to have an affinity for hallucinogenic plants.
• Why is Seelix asking for a medic? She has enough medical background (Kobol) to know when it’s useless. And why is she at the CIC bunkroom?
• I really hate that the Hera’s babysitter is Dee. (La la la – I still imagine it's Unca’ Saul) Whose gonna take care of Nicky, now that his dad’s been outted?
• Ruins do not look like 2000 years old.
• Why are the Agathons that happy? Everyone else is miserable. If my hopes and 40,000 of my friends’ hopes were destroyed, I’d really want to BURN the chirpy couple.
• Was that some other Six at Baltar’s Lab? Must’ve been, since both Tigh and Gaius weren’t really reacting to HER. OOO, when or if Ellen comes back, she and Caprica are gonna girlfight over Tigh.
• I miss the green ambrosia.
• Any bets that Lee will never take off that ring now?
• Is there a RDM commentary podcast yet?

I've usually been spoiler-lite (watching SciFi promos) but after Season 4.0, I no longer even watch those.

I never thought I'd see the day when I would say, "I'm rooting for the Beauty Queens on the Amazing Race." (Wha..? But you think BQs are flotation devices...) That's Amazing Race ASIA of course (available on AXN in the Philippines). They're the only likable team that has a chance to win. And I'm pretty sure THESE BQ aren't floatable.

This year the ARA teams seem chosen so that not one team is grossly more athletic than the others (no all-male extreme sports team here like last year). In fact the three all-male teams all could use more gym time. Strangely there's only one couple "dating" among three co-eds teams (cousins & siblings); hopefully this couple will be WAY less dysfunctional than last year's squabbling marrieds.

I also expect more meltdowns from this cast: There's a self-proclaimed "Heiress" and her actress friend; there's Mai*, who claims her "parents brought her up as a Little Princess" and she CHOSE her partner because HE can carry her bag AND be strong, not like her, cuz y'know "I'm a girl"; there's one Fazzie (or was that A.D.) who argues that lazier people can complete the tasks faster; and finally there is an only son, 'who is the sole recipient of my entire family's affection'. SNERK!!! Let the WHINING begin!!!

*Mai and Oliver were first to finish yet still managed to have a blow up after receiving a cash prize: Oliver complained that he did all the work (possible true), so Mai got all defensive and potty-mouth at him ALL THE WHILE FANNING HERSELF! (oye suplada!)

Strangely enough I was thinking of getting a dog and had narrowed down the choices to Whippet (is introverted like me) and Belgian Malois (sp? a friend has puppies). So I guess I better add Jack Russell to the list.

A/N:1 Written for ferr89 for the klficathon . Her second prompt was

"Kara comes back, is in the brig, and the cylons want her. Somehow, Adama, Lee and Karl are lured/kidnapped and taken to a base star. Kara is sprung by the cylons and is brought to the group. Confrontation with Leoben. He taunts her with the fact that he's the only one that wants her. Not the would be father, the one time lover, or the cylon loving would be brother, but just him. He'd never cast her aside etc. Have her make a stand while confronting each man. Leoben dies, family reunited, etc."

A thousand apologies to her for being late and for straying from the prompt quite a bit, but this is where the Muses led instead.

A/N 2: The 'Kataris' poem Kara mumbles is, of course, based on I Corinthians 13:4.

AGAPÊ

One day Kara Thrace started to believe the “prophecies” sporadically spewed by the Hybrid whom she was forced to room with on the Base Ship. The very next day, Leoben allowed her to return to the Colonial Fleet.

But only after six weeks Leoben decided he wanted her back. Admittedly, Kara Thrace was not unhappy to see him again. It was painful to be on Galactica and have everyone she loved give up on her. The rest of the Colonial Fleet had turned her into a pariah, so the brig was her protection as well as her jail. ‘Love is patient’.

The more devout people of the Fleet already had firmly placed their faith in Roslin, their dying leader. For Kara to come back from dying with the information to Earth bespoke of heresy. And with Baltar’s cult also gaining more and more fanatics, the less devout were wary of anything that was a little too mystical.

But Kara was convinced the Hybrid was correct, that she was this “Harbinger of the Apocalypse”: The Harbinger will bring the end of the history and the Constant One will bring the beginning of the new history. The Harbinger will be given knowledge of the new Earth upon her dying. Yup, that’s me. The Constant One will be slay’d by his love seven times, and yet seven times he will return remade and unwavering to fight by the side of the Harbinger. Eight, I’ve killed Leoben eight times – so why does he believe he’s this herald of a new age?

So Kara was not truly surprised when it was Leoben who broke her out of the brig. Disappointed that it wasn’t Lee, but not surprised. Leoben had boarded Galactica with a Heavy Raider with some Centurions, during a Raider attack.

“Come with me and I’ll make sure the Centurions stop killing your people.”

So she went. They bypassed the Six without offering to free her. Leoben loaded her on the Heavy Raider and detached it from Galactica. The Centurions were left behind. Kara was Leoben’s only concern.

“Why do this?”

“We had a deal. I would arrange for your escape from the Base Ship. You’d lead the humans to Earth, you’d return to me, and together we’d begin a New Age. Together.”

“But it has only been six weeks.”

“They were getting farther and farther away from the Ionian Nebula.”

“These things take some time. Eventually– ”

“Eventually!” Leoben scoffed. “I heard the Admiral kept you in the brig and said he preferred it if you had stayed dead.” ‘Love is kind.’

Kara did her best not to flinch. Leoben always did know which cut would hurt the most. But Kara had developed some defensive tactics. If he started to mess with her head, she’d talk back – it broke the rhythm he seemed to need.

“You know, ya got tell me how you access your spy network on Galactica from the Base Ship.”

“He practically disowned you and was contemplating throwing you out of the airlock.” Well only sometimes did it break his rhythm. As a last resort to ignore the his mindfrak games, she’d recite Kataris in her head instead: ‘Love is patient, love is kind.’

“But he didn’t.” She just shrugged nonchalantly, but Kara’s insides were churning all over. “He didn’t,” she whispered to reassure herself. ‘It is not rude, it is not self-seeking.’

“If it was me, I’d have been overjoyed just to have you back in my arms, even if it was my enemy that saved you. Kara, I would have never turned away from you. Never. I love you. And obviously, your ‘family’ doesn’t.”

Despite wanting to distrust anything the Cylon says, she always suspected it was true. It didn’t help that the last four weeks in the Galactica solitary brig seemed to prove him right. ‘Love is not envious.’

Six weeks ago, she had returned to Galactica with good news – she had a way to get to Earth. She knew it would be a challenge to convince the Fleet of the truth of it, but when did Starbuck ever back down from a challenge? After the first two weeks of testing and interviews - well, interrogations - they left her alone in the brig for four more weeks. How do you convince anyone, when no one will even listen? Well, no one except Lee.

When she had first landed, Lee had been the first to greet her. It felt like coming home, and the memory kept her strong during those four self-pitying weeks when all her insecurities threatened to take over her resolve. Lee was astounded at seeing her alive, flying in a pristine Mark II no less, but he was inexplicably unskeptical about her story of Earth. She saw that he believed in her no question, defying that over-thinking logical brain of his. But, the Galactica crew’s reaction had been just the opposite. They had been incredibly blasé about the miraculous return of Starbuck, but were instantly wary and suspicious when she announced that she’d take them to Earth.

Roslin took personal charge of the interrogations. Lee was there the first week, a defense to Roslin’s prosecutorial stance. But then Roslin took ill – the cancer was back – and they had to deal with the Admiral. But Adama wouldn’t come if Lee were there (apparently they feuding again). When the Admiral finally agreed to come, Sam and Helo were there for support. Lee had coached them both in their arguments, but it hadn’t mattered.

“Sir, Admiral,” Sam started, but flinched at the anger practically radiating from the Admiral. The Admiral had eyes only for Starbuck. Kara had been on the receiving end of the infamous glare before, but those previous times were tempered with disappointment and frustration and ultimately, love. Now there was only distaste and finality.

“Kara Thrace died over two months ago. If you thought taking her form would make us more amenable… you were wrong. You, you I do not know. I don’t want to. You can rot here forever for all I give a shit.” Adama’s complete intransigency was shocking, rending both Helo and Sam silent.

But Kara still tried to get through to the Admiral – too much depended on them to get back on the correct course. “Sir, We have to go back, we’re going the wrong way, every jump takes as further from the wormhole…”

But a Condition One had cut her off.   The Admiral left with a parting threat, “Your presence here on my ship is inciting an unrest I find totally unacceptable.”

The next four weeks alone had been misery. Sam had died in that very same attack. Helo was hesitant to go against the Admiral, his family’s physical well-being dependent on the Adama’s goodwill; he wouldn’t risk Hera and Athena being exiled from Galactica. Meanwhile Lee had gone to try to campaign the Quorum to overrule the Admiral. Being left alone was worst than physical torture – the pain would have been a distraction to the uncertainty of being airlocked or to the torments of her old insecurities.   She needed to get her head back on the game. She had destiny, no, a mission!   The Old Man’s own mission, in fact: find Earth.

Back in the Heavy, Leoben was still pontificating. “I know they hurt you, your family. But you still have me. I’m your family now.” Kara silently disagreed. ‘It is not arrogant nor rude.’

“Where are we going then? We still need to get to Earth.”

“Back to the Base Ship. Not to worry, I’ve disposed of the other Cylons.” Leoben grinned at her as if he had just presented her a bouquet of flowers.

“Centurions? Raiders?”

“Just a hundred for maintenance and the twenty that boarded Galactica.” Kara just shrugged. Ah well, a hundred more to go. “All twenty-four Raiders are in play. The other eleven Heavy Raiders are sleeping.”

“And the rest of the Cylon Fleet?”

“Off searching two systems away from here.”

“They don’t know you’ve turned then, to help us find Earth?”

“To help you,” Leoben corrected. “The other Cylons think we were destroyed by an astrological burst too far to resurrect. I can still access information. All this I have done for you. Have I not proven my loyalty to you?” ‘It does not boast. It is not proud.’

“I don’t want the other Cylons to follow us to Earth.”

Leoben agreed, “The New Age will begin with or without the Cylons reaching Earth.” Too bad the other Cylons doesn’t share that view. “The Hybrid can persuade the other Base Ships to turn against the other Cylons. And my model can be used to infiltrate both Fleets.” This gave Kara a thought. The Hybrid and her had become close during her previous captivity. It had some sort of indistinct loyalty or affinity to Kara – well, to the Harbinger – as did Leoben but to a lesser extent for all his talk of devotion.

Carefully, Kara took Leoben’s hand, knowing it would make him more amenable, “Have the Raiders stop firing at my pilots.”

“No! They are still firing at us.”

“Let me pilot the Raider, I’ll evade them.”

“No. It’s too risky. You are too important!”

“Stop them or I won’t return.”

“No.”

Kara took a deep breath and stoically said, “You say you love me. If you really did, then logically, you would do as I ask.” ‘Nor does love insist on its own way.’

Starbuck saw Leoben pause to consider her words. Before, she had just scoffed that a Cylon was not even able to love at all. Recently she’d been restrained, muttering poetry in her head instead. But her unusual statement gave him hope, disproportionate as it may be.

“There. The Raiders, they’ve stopped. You see? No one else could love you more than I. You can even kill me, yet I’ll always return to you.”

Kara just asked, “So where are the controls in this ship?” Don’t smirk.

Despite its bulk, the Heavy could maneuver well, but for some reason, maybe faulty programming, it flew unimaginatively and very predictably on its own. But with Kara, the Heavy flew with her reckless grace – twist and dodge.

Under the guise of evasion - flip, dive, and roll - Starbuck bought time to keep from heading toward the Base Ship. She had a decision to make first: Either escape back to Galactica and risk the Raiders and Centurions re-arming; Or, return to the Hybrid and risk the Fleet forever mistrusting her. But without her special insight, the Fleet could take generations to reach Earth. The Base Ship and the Hybrid could be used to protect the Fleet from the rest of the Cylons. Or maybe… she could use the Cylons to herd the Fleet back to Earth. But how? Starbuck’s great at making split-second tactical decisions, but Apollo’s much better at strategic long-term planning.

The remaining Cylon Raiders purposely flew to obstruct the vipers away from the Heavy, some even sacrificing themselves. Soon there would be no more Raiders and all eight vipers would be after Starbuck. Yet she still hung back, waiting. Until one viper, a Mark VII, evaded the Raiders and approached the Heavy. Starbuck deliberately used the exact evasive tactics she had used almost two years ago: Avoid, stall, and pivot. Only Apollo could have reacted in one way: he wagged his wings, then flipped to formation behind her Heavy – taking the second place to her lead.

Decision made, Starbuck careened the Heavy towards where the Base Ship was hidden behind a gas field. She could sense where the Hybrid was, just as she could tell where Galactica was, and where Earth was in relation to the two.

“A viper is following us.” Oh really? Noticing that just now?

“He’s supposed to come. The Hybrid said so.” Actually the Hybrid hadn’t, but he couldn’t know that and Kara instinctively knew the Hybrid would back her up if pressed by Leoben. “Besides the pilot is a respected man. I’m gonna need him to convince the rest of the Fleet about Earth.”

“Just remember, I’m the only one who’s never given up on us.” Here we go again. Kara did her best not to roll her eyes. ‘Love bears all things, believes all things.’

“You’ve killed me seven times, and seven times I came back to you.”

“Eight.” Kara corrected.

“Seven!” Leoben insisted. “Laura threw me out the airlock, not you!”

“Right.” Kara placated. But silently she counted the many times she had slay’d Lee: one, sleeping with that Major in Lee’s own bunk; two, agreeing to Zak’s proposal; three, accepting the post on Galactica rather than on Atlantia; four, shooting him on Cloud Nine; five, retiring from the military; six, marrying Anders; and seven, killing herself in front of him in the Mandala. And always, he picked himself up. And always, Lee came back to her. Her one true constant. ‘Love owes no obligation, it keeps no record of wrongs.’

Kara has a special destiny: It was to lead the Colonists to a new home on Earth and thus end the history of the Twelve Colonies. She’d do it too, even being a pariah to her family and people, because she wanted her pilots to have fat pilot babies. She wanted the Admiral to lay down his burdens with his mission completed, and for Karl’s family to play Sam’s beloved Pyramid in the sunlight. ‘Love hopes all things, …’

And she could not lead the Colonists from the brig. But the Hybrid was an incredible asset, though she’d have to endure Leoben’s worship. ‘…endures all things.’ If she was gonna gonna be a martyr for the Fleet, then she was gonna be selfish and have Lee stay with her this time. The Fates had decreed Kara to be special. But instead of cursing them, she was now eternally grateful. Because Lee was now special too; She was tired of pushing him away. ‘Love preserves.’

As the Base Ship came to visual range, Starbuck changed positions with Apollo, steering the Heavy to his six. To anyone else, it seemed as if the Heavy was threatening to shoot the viper if he cut and run. But just between Kara and Lee, it was a promise: “I have your back.”

To Leoben, she just smiled and made another silent promise: “It’ll be nine as soon as I can arrange it.”

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the place to post this (and if not, please delete this), but can anyone tell me where in the Series aired it was said that Zak was the younger brother? I've always assumed that was the case, but watching AoC and the Mini it never said so…
